A UK-WIDE emergency alert test will take place this Sunday, September 7, to ensure the Government’s system is working correctly. Since then, five real alerts have been sent out – all during major storms when lives were genuinely at risk. The Emergency Alerts system serves a crucial purpose to keep the public safe and will only be used when there is a danger to life nearby. The government has likened the run through to testing smoke alarms or practising fire drills – it needs to know that it will work effectively during a real life-threatening emergency.
