Thousands marched across Serbia yesterday to mark the 11-month anniversary of the collapse of a newly constructed canopy at a train station in the city of Novi Sad that ignited student-led protests last year against corruption in the administration of President Aleksandar Vucic. The protests occurred despite a recent crackdown on such dissent by Vucic. The train station collapse was the spark that ignited the protests, but it was “merely the latest demonstration of the corruption and negligence that have been hallmarks of Vucic’s ruling Progressive Party, or SNS, over the past decade,” Stefan Antic wrote in WPR in March. Antic examined the tactics that have helped sustain and grow the protest movement, including its leaderless nature, the secrecy of its planning and the support it has garnered from opposition parties.
