An Amazigh elder and a young girl pour scarce potable water from a nearby reservoir into water jugs. “The music that I play [is like when] I walk throughout the desert,” Meskaoui says. The sounds of the desert are the main inspiration for Meskaoui’s music: walking on gravel, stones clicking together, the thud of camel hooves on dirt. Women’s water music, or Etëtung, is a performance native to the Banks Islands, where women and girls create rhythms by drumming the water and singing along. Leweton’s performers have traveled around the world to share their water music.
