The island was still reeling from the effects of Hurricane Beryl—the earliest Category 5 Atlantic hurricane in a century—and the pervasive effects of climate change were laid bare. Visions of Climate Futures (One World Press, September 2024), Johnson offers an evocative exploration of possibility and transformation in the face of climate change. Climate change would be embedded in all local journalism, not viewed as a niche topic. And reflecting on Marge Piercy’s poem “To Be of Use” inspired me to view my climate work, with its many ups and downs, as an exercise in perseverance. To me, it is a prayer for the modern era: where practicality meets possibility.
