Where authorities have failed over 30 years to rebuild what was lost, multi-racial organizing has succeeded in leading progressive change.
“And so the campaign then shifted to rebuild South L.A. without liquor stores,” she adds.
Initially headed by a White corporate executive from neighboring Orange County named Peter Ueberroth, Rebuild L.A. seemed doomed from the start.
“In 1992, South L.A., Koreatown burned down,” says Chang.
