In the August principal field crop estimates report published Sept. 17, higher yields for wheat and canola and greater planted area for corn, along with generally favorable weather, were credited for the increases. Nationally, wheat production is projected to increase 1.9% year over year to 36.6 million tonnes in 2025, largely attributable to higher anticipated yields, which are expected to rise by 1.8% to 51.1 bushels per acre. The increase in expected total wheat production is attributable to spring wheat, which is anticipated to edge up 0.3% to 26.6 million tonnes. “Drier-than-normal conditions in major corn-producing provinces, coupled with high temperatures, may have contributed to lower anticipated yields,” the report said. Oat production is anticipated to rise by 0.4% to 3.4 million tonnes, a result of higher yields, up 1.6% to 90.1 bushels per acre.
