Prevention Education Evaluation Recovery (PEER) Services will host “Step Up for Recovery,” a community walk and celebration marking 50 years of impact in substance use prevention and treatment, from 1 to 3 p.m on Oct. 5 at Evanston’s lakefront. This milestone event is an opportunity to highlight an urgent issue: While thousands in the community struggle with substance use disorders, stigma and cost often keep them from getting help. PEER Services has provided compassionate, affordable care to youth and adults for half a century, with a focus on low-income and uninsured families. The afternoon will feature a half-mile solidarity walk, music, family activities, raffle prizes and a community resource fair with tools and information for health, prevention, harm reduction and recovery. Proceeds will help ensure that cost is never a barrier to care.
