AI chatbots are getting so good at mimicking human behavior that an Ohio lawmaker has proposed a bill to block them from attaining legal personhood or enjoying human privileges, such as marriage, property ownership, or company leadership. As The Newark Advocate reports, state Rep. Thad Claggett (R) introduced House Bill 469 on Sept. 25, and it aims to maintain a clear line of separation between humans and AI chatbots. The proposed law also prohibits AI systems from owning or managing companies, real estate, and financial and digital assets. The bill also requires owners of AI products to maintain proper oversight "over any AI system whose outputs or recommendations could reasonably be expected to impact human welfare, property, or public safety." In the recent past, AI chatbots have advised users to jump off tall buildings over job loss, initiated sexual conversations with minors, provided incorrect health advice, and provided suicide instructions.
