Currently, Tube cleaners receive only statutory sick pay, which is not enough to live on, meaning cleaners cannot afford to be ill. This is an outrageous situation for workers who play a vital role in keeping the Tube system running. RMT last balloted cleaners in November 2019, winning a huge majority for action but falling agonisingly short of the turnout threshold imposed by Tory anti-union laws. A major mobilisation will be needed to ensure the turnout is met this time and cleaners can strike. Anti-union legislation prevents direct solidarity strikes, but bear in mind that poor conditions and inadequate staffing levels for cleaners also mean less clean workplaces, and therefore less safe conditions, for directly-employed staff too.
