Mesothelioma, known by some as the "Swindon Disease", is a rare and deadly cancer linked to asbestos exposure. The disease’s reach has not been limited to Swindon or even to railways, but the nickname "Swindon Disease" persists because of the scale of local cases. The nickname "Swindon Disease" was also questioned. Jack Soley asked: "Who calls Mesothelioma the 'Swindon Disease'?" Rosemarie Craig replied with a stark reminder of the scale: "when my father was diagnosed with this disease in 1990 our solicitor had 92 cases on her books that's why it's called The Swindon Disease."
