Why the Source of Misinformation MattersYet a focus on the individual receivers of misinformation serves to divert attention from its source. We need specific models of predicting misinformation aggression. Designing systemic interventions that target the sources of misinformation narratives: Once we begin to view misinformation as proactive aggression, we can focus on system-level intervention efforts. For example, research on corporate misinformation has demonstrated the efficacy of legal consequences—such as suing partisan media organizations that spread misinformation—in deterring misinformation campaigns. An effective response to calculated, aggressive power grabs through misinformation must target both individual cognitive vulnerabilities as well as the behaviors of misinformation perpetrators.
