The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) says it is assessing complaints against former Ukhozi FM radio presenter Ngizwe Mchunu for allegedly making derogatory remarks against the LGBTQI+ community. SAHRC on Ngizwe MchunuIn a statement on Thursday (2 October), SAHRC said it was aware of Mchunu’s “alleged homophobic and offensive utterances.”“The Commission confirms that it has received complaints from aggrieved members of the public and civil society organisations regarding these alleged offensive remarks,” it added. “The Commission is registering the complaints and will assess them in line with the Commission’s Complaints Handling Procedure. Leading human rights activist Mxolisi Makhubu was among the first to formally file a complaint with SAHRC, accusing Mchunu of hate speech, incitement to violence and ethnic mobilisation. Embrace Diversity Movement secretary-general Mpho Buntse also condemned Mchunu’s remarks, describing them in an open letter to SAHRC as “a direct assault on the constitutional values of equality, dignity and freedom.”United Democratic Movement leader Bantu Holomisa similarly criticised the comments.
