The nature of warfare is changing in ways that are likely to make large footprints of forces more vulnerable and more dispersed ones more successful. And the nature of military communications is changing too, in ways that are likely to make that dispersion a lot more achievable. It’s dispersed forces and the ability to have information move quickly across the battlespace to be relevant and timely and impactful. A critical need is to make sure the military services can continue to use the existing systems they currently depend on while transitioning to the next generation of satellite communications. There are ways to do that with a hybrid approach that starts introducing the redundancy and reliability that comes with a proliferated constellation, said Sam Mehta, president of communications systems at L3Harris.
