The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, has explained why the National Judicial Council now makes public the names of people seeking to become judges.
Justice Kekere-Ekun spoke while presenting a paper at the Commonwealth Magistrates and Judges’ Association Triennial Conference in Banjul, The Gambia.
She said the decision allows citizens and other stakeholders to give feedback, raise objections, or endorse candidates before the council makes final appointments.
Justice Kekere-Ekun, however, admitted that challenges remain in the appointment process.
She pointed out that delays by the executive in approving NJC recommendations often prevent the courts from sitting at full capacity.
