The investigation was led by West Yorkshire Police and had strong Bradford connections.
Having been serving his sentence in HM Prison Durham, a category B facility in the north east, he was later moved to HMP Thorn Cross.
However, the 59-year-old died in the category D open prison, located on Arley Road in Appleton Thorn, on August 21 this year.
A spokesman for Cheshire Police confirmed that officers were called to HMP Thorn Cross on August 21.
Bullough was jailed alongside three other defendants for a combined total of 21 years and 10 months following an investigation into drug dealing by West Yorkshire Police.
