A spokesperson for Cumbria police said: "Cumbria Police has strong and positive relationships with local businesses and our officers work together with business representatives to catch those who carry out such offences.
The spokesperson said: “Whilst the stats presented for Cumbria may appear positive, we are also aware that shoplifting can be under-reported.
This can include prosecutions and other means including working to secure Criminal Behaviour Orders (CBOs) with conditions which offer greater protection to local businesses from prolific offenders.”
