“[Tatreez] represents our Palestinian identity, our heritage, resilience and even our resistance,” Khreiwesh said. Khreiwesh continued to explain how tatreez became a symbol of Palestinian resistance to Israeli occupation and land theft. During the First Intifada from 1987 to 1993, Palestinians protested and engaged in various acts of civil disobedience against Israeli occupation. “As a result, Palestinian women began to incorporate the flag and its colors onto their tatreez as a means of resistance to the occupation,” Khreiwesh said. “Tatreez came to be a very important expression of the identity, heritage and peaceful resistance of Palestinian women.
