It is not talking about a person’s inner walk with the Lord as if it can be separated from other areas of life. Faith is described as a shield, salvation as a helmet, and the word of God as a sword. In other words, we are to depend entirely upon Jesus Christ, the Savior sent from the Father, in every aspect of our lives. Believe in the power of Christ to save. And believe that by his grace alone, you are a servant in his plan to call sinners to salvation in him.
