The bill would launch a pilot program allowing district attorneys in Ventura, El Dorado, Alameda and Santa Clara counties to petition courts for Gun Violence Restraining Orders, also known as GRVROs, or “red flag” orders.
Under current law, only law enforcement officers, family members, roommates, coworkers and some school officials can file for the orders.
“When someone poses an imminent threat of violence to themselves or others by having a firearm, gun violence restraining orders can be a lifesaving tool,” Nasarenko said.
The United States continues to grapple with high levels of gun violence.
“ The information gathered could lead to legislation that would have a significant impact on gun violence in California,” she said.
