Ramjugernath points to commercialisation and partnerships as key to future growth in inaugural addressStellenbosch University’s new vice-chancellor has warned that stagnating government funding is forcing South African universities to diversify their revenue streams, including through greater commercialisation of research.
In his inaugural speech on 1 October, Deresh Ramjugernath said financial sustainability issues stemming from “ever-decreasing subsidies and grants from government, greater student debt and the escalating costs in the provision of higher education” required “a strong focus on fundraising and diversification of revenue streams”.
