Owners of Kaieteur Kitchen, Original Caribbean Spice, Daddy O’s, and El Guambra have been locked out of their premisesA number of traders in Elephant & Castle’s Castle Square, a relocation site for businesses from the former Elephant & Castle shopping centre, have been locked out of their shops following a ‘Letters Before Action’ demand issued by landlord Get Living on 15th September that they pay electricity arrears in full within 14 days. Guyanese restaurant Kaieteur Kitchen, Jamaican venue Original Caribbean Spice, Nigerian restaurant Daddy O’s, and Ecuadorian spot El Guambra were shut out from their units on 1st October, after being faced with huge back-billed electricity charges from management company Savills, despite attempts to negotiate payment plans. Colombian cafe Coma y Beba, closed last month after coming under similar pressure from the landlord and management, meaning that five longstanding, independent and non-white owned businesses in Castle Square have been closed in just over a month. Charity organisation Latin Elephant is protesting the evictions with the traders in Castle Square today (2nd October) and is inviting people to come down and join. Southwark residents can also write to your MP and local councillors in protest.
