Senator Josh Hawley of Missouri pressed airline executives this week over what he described as predatory practices aimed at maximizing profit margins by imposing excessive fees on travelers. During a Senate hearing, Hawley questioned Frontier Airlines CEO Barry Biffle about the company’s carry-on bag policy. “About nine years ago, your chief commercial officer testified to me that Frontier pays its gate agents bounties to stop paying customers from carrying bags onto the plane. We do offer incentives and commissions to stop people who didn’t pay.”Hawley criticized the policy, calling it harassment of paying customers. Hawley then turned to Allegiant Airlines CEO Greg Anderson, questioning whether the company charges families with children under 13 additional fees to sit together.
