As discussed in a piece earlier in this series, chatbot dependence can dangerously exacerbate severe mental illness by validating psychotic thoughts, suicidal feelings, manic grandiosity, and eating disorder. The clearest possible warning that chatbot addiction is an existential threat to humanity was recently provided by a chatbot. Because chatbots have been widely available for just 3 years, there are very few systematic studies on their psychiatric impact. It is therefore far too early to consider adding new chatbot related diagnoses to the DSM and ICD (eg, Chatbot Addiction, Chatbot Induced Psychosis, Chatbot Induced Eating Disorder, Chatbot Induced Manic Episode, etc).
