In the first half, the Utes were plagued by missed field goals and their first turnover of the season. Wyoming played without one of its biggest offensive weapons, John Michael Gyllenborg, through most of the game. The Wyoming defense stopped a Utes team that came into week 3 averaging 53-points per game against opponents. The Pokes forced a turnover and stymied the Utes inside the 30, forcing three missed field goal attempts in the first half.
