Jake Chandler, who represents St Andrews on Swindon Borough Council, has backed a campaign led by Wiltshire Wildlife Trust calling for greater conservation of the fragile habitats, most of which are found in England. He drew attention to the petition on World Rivers Day and described chalk streams as "one of the world’s rarest and most important habitats." The councillor is urging people to sign the petition at https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/731397Around 85 per cent of the world’s 200 chalk streams are located in England, with many flowing through Wiltshire. These streams are fed by filtered spring water from a chalk aquifer, creating ideal conditions for species such as water voles, brown trout, and a range of invertebrates. Cllr Chandler said: "Their protection is a critical matter of conservation."
