MANILA, PHILIPPINES (17 September 2025) — The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a $3 million grant to support the humanitarian needs of the people of Afghanistan following the earthquake that struck Nangarhar Province in the country’s east on 31 August, causing widespread loss of life and homes.
The emergency grant will deliver life-saving food assistance, either in-kind or through cash-based transfers, to approximately 60,000 people.
Underscoring its commitment to the Afghan people, ADB is exploring further support through implementing partners to those affected by the earthquake, drawing on resources from existing and proposed ADB-financed projects in the country.
ADB is a leading multilateral development bank supporting inclusive, resilient, and sustainable growth across Asia and the Pacific.
Founded in 1966, ADB is owned by 69 members—50 from the region.
