The issue was described as “endemic” during a meeting of Prestonpans Community Council last month. The group discussed the problem after the rise was highlighted by community policing officer PC Frances Stevenson in her report to members. Between June 24 and August 25, a total of 67 instances of shoplifting were reported, which community council chairperson DJ Johnston-Smith said was “a worrying trend”. A community council member was concerned about the impact on businesses trading in the town, such as the Scotmid store on High Street. One instance of racially aggravated behaviour was reported and 14 of threatening and abusive behaviour.
