Station Gardens Community Growers, based to the north of Ormiston at the village’s former railway station, is calling on those with green fingers to help maintain the gardens as its two current custodians hope to step back. Opened as a community garden in 2015 and on the route of the Pencaitland Railway Walk, the garden has a small orchard, a large polytunnel and a variety of communal beds, as well as 50 raised beds available for individual rent. Kenneth Herd, 82, has been a member of the growers since the garden was established and spends his retirement looking after the communal space. All community members have free use of the traditional on-site pizza oven(Image: Anna McAlinden)The community gardens used to work with local schools to facilitate gardening days for special educational needs children, a project which Kenneth hopes could come back if the gardens get the right support from members. Alongside squashes, marrows and even grapes, the garden boasts a traditional stone pizza oven, which is regularly used on evening get-togethers by the community growers.
