Mr Innes was born in Musselburgh, where he spent most of his life. Mr Innes, who was Honest Lad in 1961, and his wife Margaret (née Hall), who was Honest Lass in 1960, met through the Musselburgh Festival. He was elected to Musselburgh Town Council in 1971 and served until 1975, when it became part of East Lothian District Council. As treasurer at the time, it was Mr Innes who provided a guarantee against the loan taken out to build the clubhouse at Stoneyhill.
