Rayleigh Recycling Centre, on Castle Road, was shut today after the canister caused a fire in the centre’s metals bin. A spokesperson for Essex County Council said: “Rayleigh Recycling Centre was closed today due to a fire on site. Management of the incident was then handed over to staff at Rayleigh Recycling Centre. “We have seen them again this week work at pace to deal with the fire at Rayleigh Recycling Centre, to ensure safety of staff and residents and as minimum disruption as possible. “These fires are wholly avoidable by ensuring we don’t dispose of batteries, vapes and other hazardous items in general waste.
