Southend Council is taking advantage of new powers granted to local authorities in England since May 2022, which allow councils to enforce moving traffic restrictions using cameras. The initial phase will see cameras installed at ten locations across Southend, targeting problem areas such as yellow box junctions, banned turns, and school streets. Daniel Cowan, leader of Southend Council, said: “Securing these new enforcement powers is an important step in making our streets safer, less congested and more accessible for everyone. Restrictions that can be enforced include no right or left turns, school streets, “School Keep Clear” markings, yellow box junctions, and no entry zones. Parents who flout bans on driving in school streets during drop-off and pick-up times could also be fined under the new scheme.
