Criminal law seeks to regularise society in an orderly manner, diminishing chaos as much as possible by punishing the members of society who breach such laws. Incapacitation may also take other forms, such as certain prohibitions directly attributed to the crime itself imposed by the courts of law. As is evident throughout, the core principles of punishment are directly attributed to one another, offering a theoretically sound base to satisfy the objectives of criminal law. This means the offence per se is considered a crime, but the punishment imposed would normally be applicable to contraventions. Punishments in criminal law serve to apply the rule of law within a jurisdiction while aiming to satisfy the core principles for their enactment.
