Coach JJ Redick is hoping the offseason addition of Marcus Smart and better health from Jarred Vanderbilt will improve the Lakers‘ perimeter defense, writes Khobi Price of the Orange County Register. Smart is a former Defensive Player of the Year and Vanderbilt has also been a highly regarded defender, but they’ve both been slowed by injuries over the past two seasons. “I’ve talked with JJ and what he expects from me on both ends, especially the defensive end,” Smart said. It’s nothing new and I remember the first thing he told me was ‘hey, if we’re going to get the Celtics’ Marcus Smart, that’s who we want, that’s who we need. He said he’s feeling much better in training camp after being able to train during the offseason.
