He said aside from being above 40 years of age, the new INEC boss should be a man of integrity, discipline and must be appointed according to the constitution and be confirmed by the Senate. There are arguments on whether President Tinubu should appoint INEC chairman even though the constitution says otherwise. While speaking in an interview at Arise News, Ugummadu said: “In 2007, the late former president of Nigeria, Umaru Musa Yar’Adua said the law appointing successive INEC chairman was not decent, credible or reliable. “The former president constituted a committee headed by a late chief justice for more scrutiny and thoroughness before the appointment of the INEC chairman, but after his death, the subsequent government weren’t interested in the committee,” he said. While decrying a situation where a man has to be a judge at his own court, he harped on the need to subject the INEC chairman’s appointment to scrutiny like that of the Chief Justice of Nigeria.
