The issue is that genetic testing is rarely offered to adults, even when they are critically ill, Drivas said. “We need to switch to a model where the default is to send (patients for) genetic testing, not the exception,” he said. Meanwhile, most of the diseases found in Drivas’ study only cause symptoms in adulthood, and may affect just one organ. However, when they made genetic testing the default in the neonatal ICU, “that disparity goes away completely, and everyone gets good care,” he said. Genetic testing is more feasible today than in previous decades, thanks to the costs getting lower and the process getting faster.
