In Wales, 217 people lost their lives while waiting for an organ transplant over the last 10 years, according to figures released by NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) to mark Organ Donation Week. Across the UK, 4,900 people died while waiting for a transplant, and a further 7,700 were removed from the active transplant list after becoming too ill to undergo the procedure—many of whom died shortly after. Anthony Clarkson, director of organ donation and transplantation at NHSBT, said: "Someone will die today waiting for an organ transplant. Earlier this year, NHSBT revealed the transplant waiting list had reached its highest level ever recorded with 8,000 people actively waiting for a transplant in the UK, including 338 in Wales. Despite the rising numbers, more than 44,000 lives have been saved or improved through organ donation over the past decade.
