Oakland city staff want to award a contract worth up to $4 million to Martin Marietta Materials, a North Carolina company with hundreds of quarries, mines, and facilities in 28 states. Under the contract, Martin Marietta would provide hot mix asphalt to fill potholes and build speed bumps. City staff did not respond to an inquiry about this from The Oaklandside. But, according to Jamie Parks, assistant director of OakDOT, there are no reasonable local alternatives for the asphalt mixture produced by Martin Marietta. The council committee agreed to put the request on an agenda for an upcoming full City Council meeting.
