The Oaklandside
An East Oakland neighborhood that has long battled speeding and sideshows experienced a tragedy this past Friday when a man named Hector Jose Ortega, 63, collided with a speeding SUV at the intersection of Miller Avenue and East 16th Street, killing him.
The video shows Ortega moving into the middle lane on Miller, either to make a left turn or to avoid the SUV.
Ortega was sent into the air, landing on the front windshield and roof of a car traveling westbound on East 16th Street.
Thomas Nguyen, who lives at the corner of 16th and Miller, witnessed the collision from his porch.
The long-time Oakland resident told The Oaklandside that both the cyclist and the driver were traveling at a high speed.
