In July, DAMS HEG won the landmark court judgement that, according to the group's legal team, completely upends how planning authorities assess new and expanding fossil fuel projects. For the Upper Hunter, that means all existing coal mine projects currently being assessed by the NSW Department of Planning and Environment will now have to include climate change impacts of those projects on the local community.
