Comment on The giant who saved the Adirondacks: How Paul Schaefer fought to protect the wilderness by Bill Keller

Paul Schaefer was born in Albany in 1908 and died in Schenectady in 1996. Schaefer’s immediate response, as it so often was, was to create an ad hoc organization, in this case, the Adirondack Moose River Committee. The Moose River Committee, guided at every step by Paul Schaefer, did the same. The incomparable Moose River Plains—wildlife habitat, recreational mecca, an entire ecosystem—would have disappeared. In the pantheon of New York environmentalists, Paul Schaefer was a giant.
