— The Laramie County Sheriff’s Office announced Wednesday it is expanding its role in federal immigration enforcement, with Sheriff Brian Kozak and 25 deputies now authorized to act under the federal 287(g) program. The move makes Kozak among the few chief law enforcement officials in the nation to complete the required training. Kozak said immigration enforcement will not supersede or divert resources from the department’s primary duties. As part of the agreement, the Laramie County Detention Center has been approved to hold immigration detainees for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. He said the revenue will be reinvested into law enforcement needs like jail maintenance and training, not ongoing expenses.
