Labour MP Rosianne Cutajar has called for "altruistic surrogacy" to be made legal. Speaking in parliament on Wednesday, Cutajar said that she does not believe in making surrogacy for commercial purposes legal, but it was a different matter for altruistic surrogacy. Several EU countries, including Greece, Portugal, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom, allow altruistic surrogacy - meaning that the woman carrying the foetus to term cannot profit from her agreement with the parents. Plans to introduce altruistic surrogacy in 2018 were scrapped following public pressure. These countries allow tests to be carried out on embryos (PGT and PGT-A) to give couples a better chance of a healthy pregnancy.
