However, using noninvasive imaging and digital tools, experts managed to reconstruct the mummies’ likely facial appearances without disturbing the remains. These digital models gave researchers the ability to “peel back” the masks layer by layer, exposing the bone structure below. For the two male mummies, researchers relied on facial measurements commonly found in modern Colombian men to guide the reconstruction.
