Walmart announced Wednesday that it’s moving to remove synthetic dyes and use of an additional 30 ingredients, including certain preservatives, artificial sweeteners, and fat substitutes, from its private brand food products.
The change will impact Walmart’s private food labels, including Great Value, Marketside, Freshness Guaranteed, and bettergoods.
“By eliminating synthetic dyes and other ingredients, we’re reinforcing our promise to deliver affordable food that families can feel good about.”Walmart stated that approximately 90% of its U.S. food private brand products are free from synthetic dyes.
The move comes after the Department of Health and Human Services in April called on the food industry to stop using synthetic food dyes.
Other companies, such as WK Kellogg Co. and Kraft Heinz, have also recently announced plans to move away from dyes.
