The Hong Kong Observatory said on Wednesday that a tropical depression formed earlier in the day to the east of the Philippines would intensify into a typhoon on Friday before entering within 800km (500 miles) of the city. This means the weather around the Mid-Autumn Festival on October 6 is expected to deteriorate, with rain and strong winds. The new system was a tropical depression located about 1,950km east-southeast of Hong Kong, with maximum sustained winds of 45km/h (28mph), as of 2pm on Wednesday.
