What do pasta machines, piano accordions and steamer trunks carrying the hopes and dreams of women bound for a new life in WA have in common? They’re among the cherished treasures now taking centre stage in a powerful new exhibition that celebrates the extraordinary influence of Italian migrant women on WA. Developed by the WA Museum in collaboration with guest curator Nella Fitzgerald, the exhibition explores themes of migration, community, work, hardship and celebration. To bring these traditions to life, the museum will host a program of events alongside the exhibition, from cooking demonstrations to passata-making workshops. “It stands as a tribute to the cultural traditions but also the strength and sacrifice of women who influenced WA’s identity.”
