Alabama’s largest health insurer says patients may pay more at the pharmacy counter beginning today as a new law takes effect, one aimed at helping save mom and pop drug stores. The Community Pharmacy Relief Act says that Pharmacy Benefit Managers, or PBMs, can no longer pay independent pharmacies less than what it costs to dispense a drug. And according to Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alabama, that new fee could be picked up by patients. “I want to be clear that under the Community Pharmacy Relief Act, patients cannot be charged more based on the new payment model. Blue Cross said patients have always paid the dispensing fee, but it was a lower amount before the new law.
