During the SEC’s week of football games on Sept. 6, the league saw one player ejected from a game for spitting on an opponent. The incident did not become a widespread issue, however, league commissioner Greg Sankey did see fit to personally warn schools in the SEC about the conference’s rules. The memo attached to Sankey’s email was largely a reiteration of the league’s rules about spotting opponents. “In reaction to the spitting the officiating crew correctly threw a flag and issued a flagrant unsportsmanlike conduct foul, which carries an automatic ejection for the involved player,” Sankey said in the memo. Officials are trained to treat spitting on an opponent as a flagrant act requiring immediate ejection.
