Former Rep. Madison Cawthorn (R-NC), whose single term in Congress ended with an ignominious primary defeat, has filed to run again, this time in the southwest Florida district Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL) is vacating to run for governor. Earlier this year, rumors began circulating that Cawthorn was plotting a return to office. On Wednesday, Cawthorn officially announced he was running for Florida’s 19th congressional district in a video posted to his social media accounts. In the video, Cawthorn calls Florida “the heart of the MAGA movement” and includes clips of him speaking in Congress, at the 2020 Republican National Convention, at President Donald Trump’s campaign rallies, and at a Turning Point USA event with Charlie Kirk. Howard Sapp is running as a Democrat, but the district is one of the reddest in Florida, and is widely assumed it will be settled in the primary.
