BLOOMINGTON — The countywide mumps outbreak — which prompted increased vigilance by hundreds of McLean County residents throughout the fall — could have been worse if people hadn't responded appropriately. "We identified it (mumps), we contained it, we educated the community and the community responded," said Melissa Graven, McLean County Health Department communicable disease supervisor. "Overall, I was pleased with the response of the schools, the health department and the others on the conference calls," said Bloomington District 87 Superintendent Barry Reilly. "If there are any mumps cases after 50 days, they are not a part of the original outbreak," she said. In the end, 38 people had confirmed cases of the contagious viral illness and 33 had probable cases, Graven said.
